Seasonal flu is a respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It is contagious and strikes the respiratory tract (nose, throat and lungs) in humans.

Every year in the United States, on average:

  • 5-20% of the population gets the flu;
  • more than 200,000 people are hospitalized due to flu complications, and;
  • about 36,000 people die from the flu.

Some people, such as the elderly, young children and those with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications.  Pneumonia is the most common flu complicaion.
